THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Anhelina Kalinina should break the top 30 on tour for the first time next week after coming back from a set down to beat fellow Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska on Tuesday. Kalinina enjoyed a transformative clay swing last spring to break into the top 40 on tour and it is encouraging to see her gearing up for more ahead of this season’s stint on her favoured surface as she stands to lose the majority of her ranking points soon. Former world number one Karolina Pliskova is a player who suffers more erratic peaks and troughs than most but it looks a real peak week in Dubai so far after she concede just three games to Maria Sakkari on Tuesday. A straight-set victory over Marketa Vondrousova in the first round is excellent fare too but Kalinina beat 10th seed Veronika Kudermetova in three sets on Monday to suggest she has a decent chance at another upset here. The conditions suit Pliskova far better and she won comfortably in their only previous match back in 2020 but take the Czech to win outright here with three sets a distinct possibility.
