World number 28 Anhelina Kalinina came back from a set down to stun eighth seed Marketa Vondrousova on Saturday and she looks finally capable of bucking her recent trend of failing to win back-to-back matches. The 26-year-old produced the best run of her career to finish runner-up to Elena Rybakina at the Rome Masters back in May but she has since failed to win back-to-back matches in 13 tournaments since. World number 248 Daria Saville upset Katerina Siniakova in straight sets on Saturday to get a strong foothold in at the China Open and she has fond memories here after reaching the quarter-finals back in 2016. The former world number 20 is patently far better than her current deflated ranking but she has struggled to find her best tennis since returning from injury earlier this season. Kalinina’s record makes this a very difficult call but take the Ukrainian to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors to leave the result up to chance.
