THE PREDICTION

World number two Anett Kontaveit passed a significant test on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Anastasia Potapova, who took out second seed Barbora Krejcikova in the quarter-finals. 26-year-old Kontaveit had been struggling over the last few months after contracting covid-19 but she looks reinvigorated this week on a spotless run to the final in Hamburg without dropping a set. World number one Bernarda Pera is the surprise finalist for a second week running after claiming her maiden title at the Hungarian Grand Prix last weekend. The 27-year-old ousted Maryna Zanevska in straight sets to also reach the final without dropping one and she takes the confidence of a nine-match winning streak into this quick rematch with Kontaveit after the Estonian won their first round encounter at Wimbledon last month. Pera is at her best on the clay and she will be a totally different prospect for Kontaveit this time around on what is by far the run of her career.

Top seed Kontaveit has excellent pedigree at this level but a streak is a powerful force on the WTA. Three sets seem likely here and it is a tough toss-up between backing Kontaveit to win outright or for Pera to earn at least a set. Kontaveit has claimed the bigger results this week and she beat Pera in straight sets only recently, so lean towards the Estonian with an outright pick.
