Tatjana Maria arrives in Guadalajara after reaching the second-round of the US Open. The German produced an excellent comeback to beat 30th seed Jelena Ostapenko, but she was unable to build on that victory as she lost in the next stage to Nikola Bartunkova. Maria led after winning the first set, but Bartunkova would fight back to win. Her best result on the WTA Tour this season was a final appearance at the Eastbourne Open, where she lost to Madison Keys.

Taylor Townsend enjoyed a considerably deeper run at the US Open, reaching the fourth-round. She swept aside Maja Chwalinska and Taylah Preston, before an impressive upset of Diana Shnaider. Despite battling hard against world number one Aryna Sabalenka, she went on to lose the match in straight sets. Townsend remained in New York and partnered Katerina Siniakova to the women’s doubles title.

Townsend leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Maria in Washington last year. She is in better form compared to her opponent and has to be the favourite to win.
