THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Andy Murray reneged on his decision to skip the clay swing entirely with a late wildcard call-up to the Madrid Open. The 34-year-old won his second of 14 Masters titles at the Madrid Open back in 2008 and he claimed a second in 2015, with a third Masters title on clay won a year later at the Italian Open. Former world number three Dominic Thiem is by far the more comfortable on this surface and for years the Austrian was touted as the main threat to Rafael Nadal’s dominance of Roland-Garros. Rather surprisingly, Thiem ended up winning his first Grand Slam title at the US Open back in 2020 and he has since struggled with fitness. Murray and Thiem are two of the best players from the last decade but this will be a fascinating fifth meeting between the two, with their head-to-head record finely poised at 2-2, as they both return from various surgeries, Thiem the more recent returnee.

If both were fully match practised and fit here Thiem would be the favourite to win through on clay but backing Murray to win at least a set looks the sensible move here with the Austrian’s last win coming almost a year ago.
