THE PREDICTION
There should be an intriguing extra element of spice to this clash between former world number one Andy Murray and former number 14 Aslan Karatsev after the Russian beat Murray to the Sydney Tennis Classic title early last season. World number 63 Karatsev went on to endure a truly woeful season of form after claiming his third of three career ATP titles but he has enjoyed some more encouraging results this year, not least a run to the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters in April. The Russian came back from a set down to beat in-form Matteo Arnaldi on Thursday whilst Murray battled hard to beat plucky challenger Ye Cong Mo in straight sets. The 36-year-old came back from a set down to beat an impressive turn from world number 154 Leandro Riedi at the Davis Cup last week but it was far from a convincing performance.
Murray has an excellent record on the Asian swing, with his most recent of 14 ATP Masters titles claimed in Shanghai in 2016 (his third there) and seven of his 46 career titles won on the Asian swing over the years, but this is a tough call to make between two players capable of much better tennis than their current rankings suggest. Back Karatsev to earn at least a set given his previous win over Murray to leave the victor up to chance.
