THE LOWDOWN
World number six Andrey Rublev backed-up a blistering first round win over Dominic Thiem with a four-set victory over Emil Ruusuvuori on Thursday. The 25-year-old lost his first two matches at Adelaide 1 and 2 to suggest he could be shocked early at the Australian Open but he beat Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas from a set down at the ATP Finals last November in proof of what he is capable at his best. Rublev reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne back in 2021, one of six exits in the last eight at Grand Slams so far in his career.
THE PREDICTION
This promises to be a really entertaining and likely topsy-turvy third round clash between world number 30 Dan Evans and the fifth seed Andrey Rublev. The pair share a 3-3 head-to-head record after Evans claimed their most recent encounter at the Canada Masters last August, where the brit enjoyed his best run of the season with a semi-final exit to eventual champion Pablo Carreno Busta. 32-year-old Evans coasted past the returning Jeremy Chardy in straight sets on Thursday to continue a so far solid Australian Open campaign but a first Grand Slam meeting with Rublev looks like the Russian’s to lose with enough space over five sets to recover from a meltdown or two. Rublev won two of their three meetings last season but all six of their matches have come fairly closely, so back the Russian to win outright here in a match likely to see at least four sets.
