THE PREDICTION

30-year-old Simona Halep is back safely-installed inside the top 10 where she belongs at world number six after claiming her third Canada Masters title on Sunday. The Romanian made it seven Masters titles overall with a three-set victory over in-form Beatriz Haddad-Maia, with back-to-back victories over title-contenders Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff before that fully deserving of the trophy. The Romanian was due to face a dangerous opening opponent in Karolina Muchova but the Czech was forced to withdraw from Cincinnati at shirt notice as she continues to struggle with an inordinate amount of injuries. 21-year-old Potapova comes in as a lucky loser after falling to Anna Kalinskaya in qualifying and we have often seen that second chance improve a player’s performance.

Halep should have too much experience to fall at the first hurdle here, despite the late fixture shake-up, and she leads Potapova 2-0 in their head-to-head after two straight-set wins last season. Back the world number six to win in two here.
