Former world number one Karolina Pliskova survived a scheduling nightmare on Monday, coming back from a set down to beat Anna Kalinskaya less than 24 hours after winning the Transylvania Open on Sunday. The 31-year-old now looks a serious dark horse at the Qatar Open having grabbed that foothold in the draw, boosted by the confidence of a six-match winning streak from her first WTA title since early 2020. World number 34 Anastasia Potapova beat lucky loser Martina Trevisan in straight sets on Monday to look a creditable threat to Pliskova in this first encounter but the former world number one will be well aware of the importance of maintaining this sudden purple patch after a drab few seasons. Three sets seem likelier than two here and a tiebreak could be in the offing between two big servers, with Pliskova turning the tide via one against Kalinskaya yesterday. Back Pliskova to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors and consider adding a tiebreak outside of an accumulator.
