28-year-old Jasmine Paolini set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 14th after beating Anna Kalinskaya to the Dubai Masters title last month and she proved it no fluke with another three-set victory over the Russian on Sunday. The Italian has enjoyed an excellent rise up the rankings since last summer but her recent step-up in level has been a huge surprise, with victories over the likes of Maria Sakkari, Leylah Fernandez and Beatriz Haddad-Maia setting out her stall as one of the best scrappers around right now.
World number 33 Anastasia Potapova conceded just two games to Nadia Podoroska to back-up an excellent opener over Marie Bouzkova to go one better than her third round exit here last season. The 22-year-old found the best form of her career so far 12 months ago on the Sunshine Double, stunning Coco Gauff in Miami before a tight three-set exit to Jessica Pegula in the quarter-finals, and her clear penchant for the conditions makes this first meeting between the two a really tough call.
