THE PREDICTION

This should be an entertaining opener between old foes Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Victoria Azarenka, with their first meeting going the Belarussian’s way at the Miami Open way back in 2009. Former world number one Azarenka has enjoyed a brilliant start to 2023 and a return to the top 20 after reaching the semi-finals of the Australian Open before a three-set defeat to Elena Rybakina. The 33-year-old has lost to an eventual finalist in three of her four tournaments so far this season and she looks too good for former world number 11 Pavlyuchenkova, who missed the majority of last season through injury. The Russian faces a long road back to the top 100 on tour and she will need better help from future draws than what Dubai’s has offered her here. Azarenka leads Pavlyuchenkova 5-2 in their head-to-head and can extend that with a win in straight sets on Monday.
