World number 20 Beatriz Haddad-Maia overcame a spirited Aliaksandra Sasnovich in three tight sets on Wednesday and she is the highest remaining seed in the draw, at second, after doubles partner Victoria Azarenka was forced to withdraw on Tuesday. The Brazilian won both of her WTA titles back-to-back in Nottingham and Birmingham on grass last summer but she has since proven a serious threat on all surfaces, finishing runner-up at the Canada Masters on hardcourts last August and reaching the semi-finals of Roland-Garros on clay this June. Former world number 11 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova finished runner-up to Barbora Krejcikova at Roland-Garros two years ago before spending most of 2022 rehabilitating a serious knee injury. The 32-year-old is wisely playing reduced schedule on tour as she builds back strength but a quarter-final exit at Roland-Garros, to eventual runner-up Karolina Muchova, and a more recent run to the semi-finals of the Tokyo Open are proof of her level when firing. Pavlyuchenkova handed Jana Fett a double bagel on Tuesday but Haddad-Maia will put up a significantly tougher challenge.
