THE PREDICTION

Former world number 20 Ana Konjuh has started 2022 off in excellent form with back-to-back quarter-finals reached at Melbourne 1 and Adelaide 2. The 24-year-old has endured more than her fair share of injuries but 2021 saw her complete a full season and steadily rise up the rankings, including reaching a first final since 2017 at the Belgrade Open. Her only WTA title to date was won as a teenager at the 2015 Nottingham Open, where she beat Shelby Rogers in straight sets in the first round. However, 29-year-old Rogers is up to her career-high WTA world ranking of 36th for a reason after some stellar performances last season, most notably her victory over world number one Ash Barty at the US Open, and a three-set win over Maria Sakkari at the start of 2022 is excellent form coming into Melbourne. The American is the favourite but pretty prone to the odd capitulation, so taking Rogers to win at least a set is a suitably cautious move here. The tougher the foe, the better she seems to play.
