World number 22 Liudmila Samsonova won three of her four WTA titles in quick succession this time last season but she lost in the round of 16 at the Tokyo Open on Wednesday to fail in defending all three of them. The 24-year-old remains a serious threat in hardcourt conditions, though, with her run to the Canada Masters final seeing huge results over Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina before exhaustion – due to poor scheduling – really hampered her against Jessica Pegula. World number 43 Alycia Parks is steadily making her way up the rankings with a serious game for hardcourts two, particularly her serve, and she should be competitive in this first encounter. It remains to be seen how Samsonova reacts with the pressure of title defence off of her back but take the Russian to come through this test outright as a real dark horse in Beijing.
