THE LOWDOWN
Former world number two Petra Kvitova was in disarray this time last season but she steadily improved over the year to end well, reaching one stage further at each successive Grand Slam to finish with a round of 16 exit at the US Open. The 32-year-old won her two Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2011 and 2014 but she has reached the quarter-finals or higher in 13 major campaigns, including finishing runner-up here to Naomi Osaka in 2019. Kvitova suffered a serious injury to her hand in a shocking knife attack in December 2016 that threatened her career but the inspirational Czech has claimed 10 of her 29 WTA titles since that day, including one of her six Masters trophies.
THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Petra Kvitova and number 70 Alison Van Uytvanck both possess uber-aggressive games that have produced two three-set matches in recent seasons, with Kvitova claiming their first at the 2020 St. Petersburg Open and Van Uytvanck returning the favour at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. 28-year-old Van Uytvanck beat in-form Magda Linette in three sets in Hobart on Tuesday before losing in the round of 16 as she continues to struggle to find her best level consistently. The Belgian can be much better than her current ranking suggests but Kvitova has already beaten the likes of Jessica Pegula and Elena Rybakina this year to suggest it will need a top 30 player at least to stop her in Melbourne. Given their record, though, back Kvitova to win outright.
