THE PREDICTION
World number six Alexander Zverev counts five Masters titles amongst his 21 career accolades but it is surprising to find he has struggled, relatively, to make a considerable dent on the Sunshine Double. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to John Isner at the Miami Open in 2018 but he has tended to enjoy his best results in the latter-half of the season, with two ATP Finals titles and a runners-up finish at the US Open in 2020 attesting to that. A straight-sets victory over Christopher O’Connell was a solid start to his Indian Wells campaign on Friday but the German has looked a little shaky since that gut-wrenching defeat to Daniil Medvedev, from two sets up, in the semi-finals of the Australian Open and this should be a considerable test against in-form Tallon Griekspoor.
World number 27 Griekspoor coasted through his opening match with Yannick Hanfmann on Friday but a tight defeat to big-serving Alexander Bublik in Dubai last time out suggests he may struggle to cope with Zverev’s power here. The slightly slower court at Indian Wells could soften a little of the German’s abilities, though, and each of their three meetings have been tight affairs – with Zverev winning their most recent in Toronto last August to lead 2-1. Back Zverev to edge through outright.
TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
