World number 66 Christopher O’Connell played well to come back from a set down to oust an out-of-sorts Jack Draper on Wednesday and he could be in for a huge match here after upsetting Alexander Zverev in their most recent encounter. World number six Zverev is in much better shape here than he was early in his return to tour from injury last April, where O’Connell grabbed the biggest result of his career in straight sets on clay at the Munich Open, but the German won their first encounter this time last season in Dubai to see their head-to-head level at 1-1.
26-year-old Zverev suffered a shock early exit to fellow German Daniel Altmaier at the Mexican Open last week and his semi-final defeat to Jordan Thompson before that in Los Cabos was also hugely avoidable. The former number two may be struggling to move on from his gut-wrenching defeat to Daniil Medvedev, from two sets up, in the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January but whilst that could affect his progress over the next few tournaments he should still have plenty enough to come through here.
