World number 16 Alexander Zverev is looking better with every passing round at the Dubai Tennis Championships after a straight-sets victory over Lorenzo Sonego on Thursday. The 25-year-old suffered a serious ankle injury in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer and only returned to the tour at the Australian Open in January, with this week seeing him win back-to-back matches for the first time. Defending champion and world number six Andrey Rublev beat Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Thursday to improve on a tough three-set comeback over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the round of 16. The Russian should be coming through this semi-final on recent form but Zverev leads their head-to-head record 5-0 and the German has yet to even drop a set in their encounters. Zverev beat Rublev in two to win the Cincinnati Masters in 2021 but a lot has changed since then. The former world number two’s fitness doubts make this a tough sell but it is hard to see Rublev overturning such a big deficit at this stage of a tournament. Back Zverev to reach the final.
