THE PREDICTION
World number seven Holger Rune overcame Roman Safiullin in three sets on Wednesday to get his Rotterdam campaign underway well enough, especially given the media attention on his ever-changing coaching set-up. The 20-year-old brought Grand Slam kingmakers Boris Becker and Severin Luthi on board late last season and at the start of this year, respectively, but both have since departed to suggest that something is wrong behind the scenes. World number 57 Alexander Shevchenko came back from a set down to beat Zhizhen Zhang on Tuesday for an excellent opener and he came close to ousting Rune in their first encounter last month, losing in three sets at the Brisbane 500, to look a considerable threat here. The Kazakh will be well aware that Rune’s once fearsome game has looked increasingly fragile in recent months to make three sets a reasonable call here but the suitably cautious concession would be backing Rune to earn at least a set to leave the result up to chance.
