THE PREDICTION

World number 51 Alexander Shevchenko overcame in-form Dominik Koepfer in three sets on Wednesday to grab an impressive foothold at Indian Wells. The 23-year-old enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season last year, bursting onto the scene with a strong run at the Madrid Masters before developing his game on indoor hardcourts to eventually reach a first tour-level final at the Metz Open, where he finished runner-up to Ugo Humbert.

World number 22 Francisco Cerundolo first came to the fore at the Miami Open two years ago with a superb run to the semi-finals and he reached the quarters last season to back it up, although he has so far struggled to find anything like that level here in California. The 25-year-old has so far endured a really tough start to 2024, bringing a 5-7 record into the draw, but a run to the semi-finals of the Rio 500 last month was encouraging. In normal circumstances Cerundolo could be quite confidently backed to come through this first encounter but take Shevchenko to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
