THE LOWDOWN

ALEX MOLCAN

24-year-old Alex Molcan will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of at least 71st after an excellent win over in-form ATP Cup hero Roman Safiullin on Tuesday. The Slovak reached the third round of the US Open on his debut last season and he could do the same again on what is his Australian Open debut. Molcan reached his first ATP tour final last season, finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at the Belgrade 2 Open.

PABLO ANDUJAR

35-year-old Pablo Andujar took out lucky loser Damir Dzumhur in straight sets on Tuesday in his first tour-level win of the new season. The world number 83 won his fourth career ATP title last season a the Estoril Open on his favoured clay, with wins over Roger Federer and Dominic Thiem later in the year some of the best of his long career.

THE PREDICTION

This looks a tough match to call between Pablo Andujar’s experience and 24-year-old Alex Molcan playing the tennis of his life so far. 35-year-old Andujar rolled back the years for some career-best wins over two admittedly out-of-sorts Grand Slam champions in Federer and Thiem but Molcan’s defeat of in-form Roman Safiullin is probably the better recent form. These two could meet quite a few times this season on their favoured clay but take Molcan to win outright on this surface and reach the third round of a Grand Slam on his debut for a second-successive time.
