World number 35 Ajla Tomljanovic will always have a place in tennis history as the player that ended Serena Williams’ career, in three thrilling sets, in the third round of last season’s US Open. The 29-year-old reached back-to-back quarter-finals at Grand Slams last season, and back-to-back at Wimbledon after also making the last eight the season before, losing to eventual finalists on all three occasions. Tomljanovic has previously struggled at the Australian Open but this could be her year as the Aussie number one now that Ash Barty has retired and this is a reasonably kind opening draw against world number 192 Nadia Podoroska, who lost both of her matches at the United Cup two weeks ago. 25-year-old Podoroska reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros on her debut back in 2020 but a serious injury saw her miss the best part of a year until late last season. Podoroska will be gearing up for a big clay swing on her favoured surface this spring but this test looks to have come far too soon. Back Tomljanovic to thrive on a big court as Aussie number one to win in straight sets here despite this being her first match of 2023.
