The 34-year-old usually enjoys hardcourts on US soil and he proved that last August by winning his second ATP title at the Winston-Salem Open, seemingly from nowhere after a quiet summer on the grass. 18-year-old Juncheng Shang was awarded a wildcard for the second year running in Miami and he came close to making full use of it this time last season with a three-set defeat to Denis Kudla. The teenager stands a fair chance at an upset here against one of the more erratic performers on tour but Mannarino looked good enough in the desert to come through here unscathed.
