THE PREDICTION
Team Canada have yet to win a tie 3-0 at the ATP Cup and they snuck through another round by the skin of their teeth with a comeback from a set down in the doubles decider against Russia. World number 11 Felix Auger-Aliassime was outclassed by world number two Daniil Medvedev but, thankfully for Canada, Denis Shapovalov’s form has improved with each passing round and the pair are an excellent doubles partnership with deciding wins in their last two ties against Great Britain and then Russia in the quarter-finals.
Auger-Aliassime faces a stern test against world number 19 Roberto Bautista Agut here with Spain the just-about likelier side to be up 1-0 already via the tie between Shapovalov and Pablo Carreno Busta. The 21-year-old Canadian captain has won his las two meetings with RBA, including in five sets at the US Open last season, but the Spaniard won their first encounter in straight sets for Spain in the final of the Davis Cup in 2019. 33-year-old Bautista Agut has been outstanding for Spain in recent years, with his three-set victory in an astounding match with world number nine his second over top 10 opposition this week. Bautista Agut is a consummate professional but more importantly a dogged fighter and after Auger-Aliassime’s defeat to Medvedev it feels like the unbeaten Spaniard is the slightest of favourites here. Take RBA to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners.
