World number eight Matteo Berrettini has returned to the tour in good form following his first Grand Slam final reached last month at Wimbledon, where he lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic. The 25-year-old wisely took some time out following such an incredible run and he will be a solid favourite for a deep run at the incoming US Open next month. Having lost the first set of his first Cincinnati Open match to Albert Ramos-Vinolas he fought back well to come through to the round of 16 and face Felix Auger-Aliassime for a third time in their careers. World number 17 Auger-Aliassime also came back from a set down in the second round to beat in-form Karen Khachanov in a welcome return to form after a few disappointing weeks.
Close friends off the court, Berrettini’s run at Wimbledon included a four-set victory over 21-year-old Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals to set their head-to-head record at 2-0 to the Italian.
