World number six Karolina Pliskova started her Cincinnati Open campaign off with a straightforward win over Yulia Putintseva to reached the round of 16. The Czech almost won her second Masters title last week in Toronto but came unstuck for the second time in less than a month against Camila Giorgi in the final there. The 29-year-old has finished runner-up at her last two tour events now after losing to Ash Barty in the Wimbledon final last month too. She will face another player fast coming back into form as world number 30 Jessica Pegula looks to be gearing up for a strong assault on the US Open next month.
