Both world number 26 John Isner and number 50 Benoit Paire have played out two rounds of tough three-set matches so far to reach the round of 16. 36-year-old Isner has taken out two strong opponents in Cam Norrie and the 11th seed Jannik Sinner as his excellent hard-court form continues and the big-serving American is a popular man to back here for the home crowds. He will face one of the larger anomalies on tour next in 32-year-old Paire, who looks to finally be turning a corner from some irrepressibly poor form this season. It is a relief to see the Frenchman enjoying his tennis again and two wins over Miomir Kecmanovic and the sixth seed Denis Shapovalov especially are matches he would have been humbled in a few months ago. Beating Shapovalov right now is no mean feat and Paire’s confidence restored is a dangerous thing indeed for Isner.
The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record so far with Paire the winner in France way back in 2010 and Isner the more recent victor on American soil at the 2019 Washington Open. There is plenty of unpredictability around this match and taking this to see at least one tiebreak is the perfect way to avoid a hard choice. Otherwise, if forced, Isner should be able to scrape through here.
