This should be a really exciting first meeting between world number 12 Pablo Carreno Busta and number 13 Hubert Hurkacz with both players gearing up for a likely deep run at the fast-approaching US Open. 24-year-old Hurkacz is the ninth seed here and played like it in an impressive straight-sets win over Andy Murray in the second round, coming through a tight first tiebreak to back up a good win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Meanwhile, 30-year-old Carreno Busta has played just the one match so far in a straight-sets win over Dominik Koepfer following a bye to the second round as the seventh seed. The Spaniard won an emotional Bronze Medal in a three-sets defeat of world number one Novak Djokovic at the Olympic Games last month to add to his two titles won this year at the Andalucia Open and Hamburg Open.
Hurkacz has already proved himself handy at this level with a Men’s Doubles title at the Paris Masters last year and a first ATP 1000 Singles title won at the Miami Open back in April. The Pole should be able to come through what looks set to be a three-set thriller here so take Hurkacz to win at least one set for a cautious pick.
