THE PREDICTION
31-year-old Guido Pella enjoyed a flutter of promising form at last month’s Wimbledon where he took a set off eventual runner-up Matteo Berrettini and that looks to have continued back on tour at the Cincinnati Open. The Argentine is yet to drop a set here with two impressive wins over David Goffin and Fabio Fognini but he has drawn a short straw here against world number five Alexander Zverev. Having avoided a first round defeat following his incredible run to the Gold Medal earlier this month at the Olympic Games, 24-year-old Zverev looks the business here in Cincinnati. Zverev had previously lost all six of his matches at this tournament but breaking his duck in a straight-sets win over Lloyd Harris on Wednesday looks promising indeed.
Pella lost in straight sets to Zverev in their only previous meeting to finish runner-up to the German at the 2017 Munich Open on clay. This looks a tough ask for Pella to break Zverev’s seven-match winning streak but he is in good enough form to suggest a decider could be needed this time around. Take Zverev to win outright here.
