THE PREDICTION
World number one Ash Barty beat a competitive challenge from Heather Watson in the second round in her first match back on the WTA tour since winning Wimbledon last month. A disappointing trip to the Olympic Games in the Singles was bettered by just missing out on a Mixed Doubles Bronze Medal but the 25-year-old has won four titles this season and looks a solid favourite to reach the final at the US Open next month. In her way is former world number one and two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka, who is yet to drop a set this week in Cincinnati with two convincing wins over Liudmila Samsonova and Alison Riske.
Azarenka won the first meeting between the two back in 2018 at the Tokyo Open but since then Barty has won two in a row and most recently in the round of 16 at the Miami Open earlier this year. The Aussie went on to win in Miami as part of what is proving to be her best year on tour and she should be able to edge through this tough test to reach the quarter-finals at Azarenka’s expense once again.
