THE PREDICTION

Former world number three Marin Cilic is through to a second-successive final after losing to Jannik Sinner last week at the Kremlin Cup. The 33-year-old is a former champion from the 2011 St. Petersburg Open and he rolled back the years this week, one decade on, with some excellent three-set victories over Karen Khachanov and Roberto Bautista Agut. The Croat took out Botic van de Zandschulp in straight sets on Saturday to set-up a second career meeting with Taylor Fritz, with the American winning their first encounter in three sets back in 2017. 24-year-old Fritz has peaked and troughed somewhat since then but he is currently rising some of the best form of his young career from the Indian Wells semi-finals through to the St. Petersburg final.

Fritz has not faced a player inside the top 50 this week in a pretty charmed draw but he has performed well against the opponents faced. A comeback from a set down to Jan-Lennard Struff on Saturday suggests there could be three sets in this final and that looks a suitable alternative to picking a tough winner. Otherwise, taking the experienced former champion Cilic to win at least a set, with the bigger scalps this week, seems the most sensible option here.
