THE PREDICTION

Paris was the scene of Stefanos Tsitsipas’ best campaign this season as he made a brilliant run to the final of Roland-Garros and two sets up before losing in the most gut-wrenching way to Novak Djokovic. The Greek has not really been the same since, with early exits at Wimbledon and the US Open symptomatic of a man who needs the winter break to take stock of his achievements so far. Still, the third seed here has a great chance at a second Masters title after winning in Monte-Carlo earlier this year on a slow hardcourt that should suit his playstyle. He faces lucky loser Alexei Popyrin after the 22-year-old conceded just three games to fellow Aussie Alex de Minaur. The 22-year-old won his first ATP title earlier this year at the Singapore Open.

Alexei Popyrin became one of three lucky losers to make the most of their second chance in the first round by beating his compatriot Alex de Minaur handily. That, and Stefanos Tsitsipas’ recent wobbly form makes this match look like a potentially huge upset and it could be worth taking a one-off punt on the Aussie to win here in what will be their first meeting. Otherwise the sensible line is for Tsitsipas to find a way through as the outright winner. You could add value to that by adding at least a tiebreak in this match with both players accustomed to playing them.
