THE PREDICTION

World number one Novak Djokovic has not played a tour-level singles match since losing the US Open final to Daniil Medvedev back in September. Djokovic won the other three Grand Slams this season to tie Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on the Men’s Open Era record 20 and he is also a five-time champion here after wins in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015 and his most recent appearance in 2019. The 34-year-old did get some match practice in on Monday in Paris in the Men’s Doubles alongside Filip Krajinovic but taking on Marton Fucsovics after the Hungarian beat Fabio Fognini in three sets on Monday will be a tough challenge. World number 40 Fucsovics got the best of the Italian in an exciting but error-strewn match on Monday but he will be raring to go and unaffected as one of the fittest men on tour.

Marton Fucsovics reached a first Grand Slam quarter-final this season at Wimbledon before losing to the eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The world number one is attempting to protect his ranking this week with it at threat for the first time in ages but he will be confident of getting over the line eventually here with a 3-0 record over the Hungarian. Djokovic needs to better Daniil Medvedev’s result in Paris ahead of the ATP Finals to stay top at the end of the season for a record-extending seventh year and that motivation should see him through some tough moments this week in Paris. It should fall in two to the Serb but considering his lack of match practice take him to win outright with the slightest scent of an upset here.
