THE PREDICTION

World number one Novak Djokovic was rusty in a number of places against Marton Fucsovics in his first match back on tour since losing the US Open final but the Serb’s winning mentality is never blunt. The 34-year-old needed a decider to oust Fucsovics but he will be the better for it as he aims to match whatever Daniil Medvedev can do this week at the Paris Masters to conserve his No. 1 ranking for yet another year. Djokovic won the first three Grand Slams this season before the pressure told at the Tokyo Olympic Games, where he lost twice to Pablo Carreno Busta and Alexander Zverev. World number 22 Gael Monfils looked like he might have to retire from his second round match with fellow Frenchman Adrian Mannarino but he fought back well to win in three on Wednesday night. The 35-year-old has come into form late this season to make up for a torrid first-half without fans present and he is clearly loving his time on a home court at the Paris Masters.

Gael Monfils has finished runner-up at the Paris Masters twice in his career, losing to Robin Soderling in 2010 and Novak Djokovic the year before. The Frenchman has lost all 17 matches against Djokovic over the years, dating from a five-set US Open first round clash in 2005 to a three-set encounter at last season’s Dubai Open. Nine of their 17 matches have seen at least a set go both ways and with Djokovic at one of his more vulnerable moments that could be a distinct possibility here. However, there is overwhelming evidence that anything but an outright victory for the world number one would be a huge shock.
