THE PREDICTION

World number 58 Dominik Koepfer is one of two lucky losers through to the round of 16 alongside Alexei Popyrin but the German has been by far the more impressive with his second chance with two of his best performances on hardcourts ever to beat Andy Murray and Felix Auger-Aliassime. A straight-sets victory early on Wednesday against Auger-Aliassime was perhaps the more impressive for his ruthlessness with the world not watching as opposed to facing down seven match points against an out-of-sorts Murray on Monday night. Koepfer made the semi-finals of the Mexican Open earlier this year on a hard court but he has so far been at his best on the clay. World number 10 Hubert Hurkacz is the next man up chasing ATP Finals qualification like FAA. The Pole beat an in-form Tommy Paul in two tight sets on Wednesday to get his Paris Masters campaign underway and with Jannik Sinner also dropping out of the draw his chances of qualifying for the year-end tournament have gone up significantly.

24-year-old Hubert Hurkacz won the Men’s Doubles event here last season alongside Felix Auger-Aliassime but he was in direct competition with the Canadian this time around for an ATP Finals slot and that plight got a little easier with both FAA and Sinner dropping out of the draw. He is the kind of player capable of weathering the momentum of Dominik Koepfer, with the German enjoying some of his best tennis this week in a well-deserved vein of form, but this looks like going perilously close. Take Hurkacz to win outright as the sensible line but this looks likely to see at least a tiebreak too for potential added value. Koepfer winning here would not be a shock after what he has achieved so far and this match should be kept well away from an accumulator.
