THE PREDICTION
World number 62 Arthur Rinderknech has enjoyed a breakthrough season this year at 26 years old at his current career-high ranking. The Frenchman has reached five quarter-finals on tour this season, and one semi-final at the Kitzbuhel Open, with two of those last eights reached on home soil in Marseille and Lyon. He faces fellow Frenchman Hugo Gaston after the 21-year-old qualified quite brilliantly by beating former world number five Kevin Anderson and Lorenzo Musetti in three sets each. World number 103 Gaston has spent much of the season on the Challenger circuit but he finished runner-up at the Gstaad Open on clay to Casper Rudd back in July. A run to the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last season, where he beat Stan Wawrinka in five sets, remains his most impressive achievement as a youngster with a promising future.
This looks a terribly tough match to call between two home favourites likely to pull a decent crowd on Monday. Rinderknech’s more direct hard-hitting style should favour the conditions indoors but Gaston’s work ethic, similar to Diego Schwartzman in some respects, could dullen Rinderknech’s blade. On their respective seasons, taking Rinderknech to win at least a set as the more consistent performer could be wise but Gaston’s qualifying campaign suggests he is in the mood this week. It is close but Gaston to win outright feels like a mini upset here.
