THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Brandon Nakashima enjoyed an excellent breakthrough season this year with a run to back-to-back finals at the Los Cabos Open and Atlanta Open, losing to Cam Norrie in Mexico and John Isner in Atlanta. However, the current career-high world number 63 really announced himself to the world by beating Isner in their first meeting the week before in Los Cabos and then Milos Raonic in three tight sets a week later in Atlanta. More recently, the young American beat Isner once again at the US Open, Fabio Fognini at the San Diego Open and Alex de Minaur at the European Open.

Juan Manuel Cerundolo reached a career high of world number 85 earlier this month after losing to Nicolas Jarry in the final of a Challenger event in Peru but the 19-year-old claimed a stunning first ATP title earlier this season out of the blue. The Argentine won on home soil at the Cordoba Open as a qualifier, defeating Miomir Kecmanovic en route to a final where he beat seasoned clay specilaist Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

Were this match taking place on a clay court, Juan Manuel Cerundolo would be the favourite to win his first ATP Next Gen Finals match. The 19-year-old Argentine is tipped for a big future, especially on his favoured surface on which he has won an ATP title and three Challenger events this season. However, an indoors hardcourt should suit 20-year-old Brandon Nakashima better in this first meeting between the two and with Jenson Brooksby not fit to play the year-end tournament Nakashima will enjoy more of the coverage back home alongside Sebastian Korda. Cerundolo has not played a tour-level match since July and rarely in hard courts so taking Nakashima to win in straight sets looks the reasonable outcome.
