THE LOWDOWN
26-year-old Yoshihito Nishioka came through a tight first round clash with Federico Delbonis on Friday via a deciding set tiebreak. The world number 75 is realistically better than his current ranking with a career-high of 48th achieved last season a better benchmark for the tricky left-hander. Nishioka won the Shenzen Open in 2018 for his only title to date but he has been a finalist in the US after finishing runner-up at Delray Beach last season. 36-year-old John Isner has won 14 of his 16 ATP titles at home in the US and he extended his Atlanta Open record to six back in August. Each of his last eight titles have come in front of home fans, including his crowning achievement so far at the 2018 Miami Open where he reached a career-high eighth in the world.
THE PREDICTION
This was a vastly enjoyable mis-match in the first round of Wimbledon back in July that Yoshihito Nishioka eventually emerged the winner from in five gruelling sets. Over three it is likelier that John Isner, who is at his best on a hard court on US soil, will regain the lead in their head-to-head record 2-1 but this should be exciting nonetheless. Given both of their matches so far have seen sets for both players, take Isner to win outright within an accumulator or in three as a one-off selection here in front of his adoring home crowd.
