19-year-old Leylah Fernandez will set a new career-high WTA ranking no matter the outcome of this round of 16 match but the Canadian is chasing glory and nothing less after an agonising loss to Emma Raducanu in the US Open final last month. The Canadian beat the tougher opponents of the two all the way through that campaign and her incredible fighting spirit has transferred over to her Indian Wells debut wit yet another three-set victory, this time over the ninth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
Meanwhile, 28-year-old Shelby Rogers is very close to emulating her career-high WTA world ranking of 40th after three successive straight-set wins at Indian Wells. Rogers also fell to Emma Raducanu’s unstoppable run to the US Open title last month just two days after beating the world number one Ash Barty. She beat Bianca Andreescu last week in Chicago, too, with consistency seemingly the only thing stopping her from breaking the top 30.
THE PREDICTION
This is going to be an interesting quandary for the Indian Wells crowd to figure out; who to side with? Home hopeful Shelby Rogers or US Open semi-finalist Leylah Fernandez? The crowd is likely to play a huge part in this exciting clash either way but the likelihood is that they lean towards the teenager after her heroics last month and that is a huge thing for Rogers to have to cope with. The American won their only previous encounter in straight sets at the Lexington Open last season, and she is well capable of coming through this test after her performances this week, but it is hard not to see Fernandez riding the crest of a wave into the quarter-finals.
