World number 115 Beatriz Haddad-Maia provided the shock of the tournament so far when she took out the top seed Karolina Pliskova on Monday in straight sets. The 25-year-old is just the latest in a long line of lucky losers to perform out of their skin at a tournament after failing to qualify in the first place. Since her defeat to Usue Maitane Arconada in the last round of qualifying the Brazilian has not dropped a set on her way to the round of 16 and she must not be underestimated any further. World number 20 Anett Kontaveit is unlikely to do that in her current form. The Estonian looks to be well on her way to reaching her lifetime goal of breaking the top 10 after a stunning victory over the reigning Indian Wells champion Bianca Andreescu on Monday. Kontaveit, also 25, has won two titles this season on hardcourts at the Cleveland Championships and the Ostrava Open.
THE PREDICTION
Anett Kontaveit is in the form of her life with just one defeat to Iga Swiatek at the US Open in her last 16 matches played, not including her withdrawal from the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic last week. The Estonian’s victory over Andreescu was no surprise given her level but her execution of it was no less impressive and she should come through this first meeting with Beatriz Haddad-Maia unscathed if she simply stays focused. The momentum that Haddad-Maia has drawn on from receiving a second chance at Indian Wells is a tough one to snap but Kontaveit should be backed, as Pliskova was, to be the top 20 player here and reach the quarter-finals. Take her at outright considering Haddad-Maia’s ousting of the top seed but Kontaveit can do this in two.
