THE LOWDOWN

10th seed Angelique Kerber has endured a tough draw so far but she has not panicked when pegged back in both second sets against Katerina Siniakova and Daria Kasatkina, going on to win the decider well. The former world number one and three-time Grand Slam champion rediscovered her motivation for the sport with an out-of-the-blue winning campaign at the Bad Homburg Open and she has since lost to the winner or finalist in three of her last four tournaments (Barty at Wimbledon and Cincinnati, Fernandez at the US Open). Going under the radar slightly at Indian Wells is 28-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic’s stellar run. The world number 47 beat Garbine Muguruza in three sets on Saturday and then the 26th seed Tamara Zidansek in straight sets to reach the round of 16 of a Masters event for only the second time.

THE PREDICTION

Angelique Kerber has won both previous meetings with Ajla Tomljanovic in straight sets at Roland-Garros in 2015 and at the US Open last season. The 33-year-old’s defensive tactics suit the conditions at Indian Wells and whilst she has dropped sets this week she is one of the hardest women to get past on tour. Tomljanovic has been impressive in parts of this season and has a chance at winning this third meeting but the likelihood is that Kerber reaches the quarter-final even if by the skin of her teeth.
