DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
- World number nine Diego Schwartzman was able to break Daniil Medvedev three times in a much-improved showing against the Russian than recent matches but he still could not get past the Russian and lost in straight sets.
- 28-year-old Schwartzman should be able to go again this season after enjoying his best year on tour last year in a disrupted calendar, though he remains a better player on clay than other surfaces.
KEI NISHIKORI
- It was good to see Kei Nishikori back where he belongs amongst the upper echelons of the ATP and the Japanese number one did wellto break Daniil Medvedev’s serve in a straight-sets defeat to the Russian.
- 31-year-old Nishikori leads a healthy-looking 3-1 head-to-head record against Diego Schwartzman, although the pair have not met since the Argentine won their last match at the 2019 Rome Masters and they have drifted in opposite directions since then.
THE PREDICTION
There is plenty left in tennis for Kei Nishikori if he can keep fit this season but world number nine Diego Schwartzman has a point to prove here as he aims to keep hold of his place in the top 10 despite a pretty poor record against those above him. The head-to-head record between Nishikori and Schwartzman is outdated to say the least and this match is more likely to see a straight-sets win for the Argentine than a deciding set, though Nishikori is tough to predict in his current state. It should be a fast-paced match and a high-quality spectacle full of running but Schwartzman to win in two seems a reasonable outcome.
