THE LOWDOWN
DANIIL MEDVEDEV
- World number four Daniil Medvedev ended 2020 the most in-form player as he won the Paris Masters and ATP Finals as the last two tournaments of the season.
- The 24-year-old was in fine form at last season’s inaugural ATP Cup, winning his first four singles matches, including a three-set win over Diego Schwartzman, until a semi-final defeat to eventual champions Novak Djokovic and Team Serbia.
DIEGO SCHWARTZMAN
- Diego Schwartzman enjoyed a career year in 2020 that saw him break the top 10, reach a semi-final of a Grand Slam at Roland-Garros and qualify for the year-end ATP Finals all for the first time.
- The world number nine was in no great shape at last season’s ATP Cup, losing three of his four singles matches as Argentina’s first option to Hubert Hurkacz, Dominic Thiem and finally Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Diego Schwartzman can be a danger to most top player on our but he has played Daniil Medvedev five times now and taken a set off the Russian just once, in the quarter-finals here last season. The pair have played each other twice since then very recently at the Paris Masters and the year-end ATP Finals last November, both of which Medvedev won in commanding straight sets to go on to win both tournaments. Schwartzman is a tireless battler but looked well-beaten and frustrated against Medvedev in those matches. Much of this match will rest on how Medvedev is playing but Team Russia have a very good chance at winning the ATP Cup with two top 10 players in their ranks and Medvedev will likely be wrapping this tie up 2-0 for Russia with a straight-sets victory.
