- Andrey Rublev won the same amount of matches (41) as world number one Novak Djokovic in 2020 and ended the season with five ATP titles, more than any other player.
- The 23-year-old looks to be following the same trajectory as compatriot Daniil Medvedev did the year before, making it eight career titles now with his capture of the 2020 Doha Open, Adelaide International, Hamburg Open, St. Petersburg Open and Vienna Open trophies.
GUIDO PELLA
- 30-year-old Guido Pella was instrumental in Team Argentina’s route to the quarter-finals in last year’s ATP Cup where he won two of his four matches as second option to Diego Schwartzman.
- Pella went on to win just five matches more last season with a 7-10 record to show for a heavily disrupted year due to the coronavirus pandemic and he struggled for rhythm after the restart.
THE PREDICTION
Andrey Rublev’s 2020 looks like it happened in a parallel universe but the 23-year-old Russian really did manage to find 51 matches to play last season and won over 80% of them to end the year as the most successful player in terms of titles won. Whilst he suffered a lapse at the year-end ATP Finals, he can look to compatriot Daniil Medvedev for inspiration after Medvedev won the 2020 event following an equally poor the season before. Medvedev’s form took some time to return after his stupendous run in 2019 but It is unlikely that Rublev will follow that particular trait as a fiercer, more determined competitor in many ways. Guido Pella could have some joy against Team Japan but the Argentine has not played a competitive match since October and lost the only previous meeting with Rublev back in 2018. With Pella far from his peak and Rublev improving all the time, this is likely to be a straight sets victory for the world number eight – a true first option player masquerading as second to world number four Medvedev.
