- Stefanos Tsitsipas had a disappointing 2020 by his own standards as the curse of winning the ATP Finals in 2019 struck him like it did Alexander Zverev the year previous and the Greek will be targeting a resurgence in 2021.
- Zverev was in fact the only player Stefanos Tsitsipas was able to beat at last season’s inaugural ATP Cup with five tiebreaks in his two defeats to Denis Shapovalov and Nick Kyrgios showing his trademark determination.
ALEX DE MINAUR
- Alex de Minaur is one of two players on tour to have won an ATP title this year already with his victory at the Antalya Open last month but he was unable to force a deciding doubles match against Team Spain.
- The 21-year-old’s job did not get much easier when Rafael Nadal pulled out of the tie as world number 13 Roberto Bautista Agut was able to weather the Australian’s classic early blitz to win the deciding set for Team Spain.
THE PREDICTION
Alex de Minaur will be desperate to win this match like no other after he narrowly lost to Roberto Bautista Agut in the first Group C tie. The world number 23 is always incredibly quick out of the blocks and won the first set to heap pressure on RBA, although unfortunately for Team Australia that is where the Spaniard is at his best and De Minaur began to tire towards the end. With a match in his legs, De Minaur will be gunning for this one against Stefanos Tsitsipas, whom will be feeling confident here as he leads a 3-0 head-to-head record over the younger Aussie. The fact that Tsitsipas has yet to play a competitive match in 2021 will likely matter less to him than most other players on tour as his fitness is almost without comparison and the fact that he will likely be fighting to force a deciding match should spur him on. This promises to be a fantastic watch for the neutrals and De Minaur will be able to make up for what looks like it will be a tight defeat to Tsitsipas by winning the doubles decider alongside John Millman. You could pick this outcome with a tiebreak in the match, as is so often the case in the tireless Greek’s tougher matches.
