- Dominic Thiem achieved a childhood dream when he won the 2020 US Open, becoming the first new Grand Slam champion since 2013, as the 27-year-old’s continuous improvement over the last few seasons finally bore fruit.
- World number three Thiem will be hoping for a much better time of it at the ATP Cup this year after he lost two of his three group stage matches last year to Borna Coric and Hubert Hurkacz.
MATTEO BERRETTINI
- Matteo Berrettini will want to forget a substandard 2020 in which he only played 15 matches and he has plenty to prove this season against an improving field of young players.
- The world number 10 reached the quarter-finals of his first and only tournament this year at the Antalya Open but he fell in straight sets to the first real challenge in Alexander Bublik.
THE PREDICTION
Dominic Thiem and Mateo Berrettini have shared several robust and hard-fought matches over the last few years, with the Italian winning their last meeting at the 2019 ATP Finals. Their head-to-head record is finely poised at 2-2 but, notably, they have not faced each other since that year-end tournament in 2019 and since then the two have gone in opposite directions in terms of rank and performances. There is no doubt that 24-year-old Berrettini has plenty of potential but he has a lot to prove again after a dismal season and his first tournament back this year has not changed that. In contrast, world number three Thiem has won a Grand Slam title since the pair last played and reached the final of the Australian Open before that. Thiem has been evolving over the last 18 months into a world-beater and he will be eager to avenge his poor showing here last year with a straight-sets win.
