DOMINIC THIEM
- World number three Dominic Thiem was blown away by Team Italy’s Matteo Berrettini in his first match of 2021 and will be hoping for better fare in this dead rubber match.
- The US Open Champion was fairly ropey at last year’s ATP Cup too before going on to reach the Australian Open final a few weeks later and Thiem should be able to find his best form quickly.
GAEL MONFILS
- 34-year-old Gael Monfils came off the wrong side of a topsy-turvy straight-sets match with Matteo Berrettini, with seven breaks of serve between them as Team Italy won Group C.
- The Frenchman appeared to be working on his service game within the match with a high first serve in percentage and five double faults and he could utilise this dead rubber match for much of the same.
THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Gael Monfils has a pretty dreadful record against Dominic Thiem with a 6-0 head-to-head record in favour of the Austrian. In fact, the 34-year-old has not taken a set off Thiem since the 2016 ATP Finals and the 27-year-old US Open champion is such a better player these days. You could be forgive for thinking the opposite after Thiem’s first match here at the ATP Cup but he will likely be looking to win this dead rubber to get the momentum for the Australian Open going and his record against Monfils should spur him on in this dead rubber tie. It might be worth holding off on this match in the markets until Monfils is confirmed to start, as one of the less reliable players fitness-wise, but Thiem should be able to take this in straight sets whomever he faces.
