- Whilst it was not enough to see Team Austria through, 27-year-old Novak is a plucky player with possibly his best years ahead of him on tour and he will be eager to play for tour points here ahead of the Australian Open draw.
BENOIT PAIRE
- Benoit Paire looked out of sorts in the first set of a straight-sets defeat to Fabio Fognini but seemed to get into a groove in the second set and he will be in better shape for this dead rubber.
- With Team Italy already through and only pride to play for, world number 28 Paire will be hoping to get a win under his belt before next week’s Australian Open.
THE PREDICTION
With nothing to play for in this entire tie between Austria and France this and the second match are essentially free match practices for guaranteed Australian Open seeds Benoit Paire, Dominic Thiem and Gael Monfils. Novak, however, will be playing for tour points ahead of the draw and he will be confident of a result here considering he beat the Frenchman at Cologne 1 last year in straight sets. Paire was out of practice in his first ATP Cup match against Fognini and, to be fair, can sometimes be the kind of player to take his eye off the ball. Given that Team France are already out, the hard-working world number 100 could make it two wins from two this week.
