- 31-year-old John Millman will relish the opportunity to represent Australia here after arguably his best season last year where he won his first ATP title in Kazakhstan.
- World number 38 Millman will feel the pressure of filling in for Nick Kyrgios, whom misses out with his current lower ranking, but the tireless Aussie will be a test for anyone he faces.
THE PREDICTION
John Millman will be charged by however many Australians the organisers manage to safely install inside the Rod Laver Arena and fresh from a break he will be every bit as energetic as his opponent here. There is scope for a deciding set in this match considering the occasion and lack of match practice in both players’ legs but the imperious form Roberto Bautista Agut displayed here last year was no fluke. As one of the higher-ranked second options, Bautista Agut was faultless in the first edition of this tournament and could do no more for Team Spain as they finished runners-up to Serbia. This time around Spain are arguably favourites and RBA will be a huge part of that with his ability to take the pressure off Rafael Nadal in the second round robin matches. Millman will fight tooth and nail but he has never beaten RBA in five previous attempts, though he should be able to force a decider in defeat.
