DUSAN LAJOVIC
- Last year’s ATP Cup surprise package Dusan Lajovic could not start this year’s tournament in the same vein in a straight-sets defeat to Team Canada’s Milos Raonic.
- The 30-year-old has faced Jan-Lennard Struff once before and lost in three sets all the way back in 2014, although both players are different entities now.
JAN-LENNARD STRUFF
- World number 37 Jan-Lennard Struff put in a stupendous performance against Team Canada’s Milos Raonic to win in straight sets vis two tiebreaks and Team Germany won the tie thanks to Alexander Zverev soon after.
- Struff also played alongside Kevin Krawietz in the dead rubber doubles afterwards, losing to Team Canada in three sets and it is unclear if Andreas Mies has an injury or Team Germany are trying to get more matches in Struff’s legs at this stage.
THE PREDICTION
In the second round of ties here at a reduced ATP Cup we have the unique opportunity to see how both players fared against a “control group” to determine who can win here. This control being Milos Raonic. Jan-Lennard Struff’s victory over the world number 15 was nothing short of marvellous considering the kind if form Raonic was in before Christmas and the feel-good factor in the Germany camp right now should see him over the line on energy alone. Struff did beat Lajovic seven years ago in three sets but both players have come on leaps and bounds since then. Lajovic came in from the cold here at the ATP Cup and is unlikely to be able to gather his wits in time in this short week to combat the force of nature that dismantled Milos Raonic. Another straight-sets win for Struff here will make for an exciting clash indeed between Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev.
